Welcome to the Wilburton website.
Wilburton is a village in Cambridgeshire, England about 12 miles north of Cambridge, 6 miles south west of Ely. The village is small, and has a good community spirit. Locally we are famed for events such as the Beer Festival, the Fireworks and the Theatre Group.
We want this site to represent the village and the people who live here, so send us your stories, events, or even local business contacts and we'll include them - free for anything in Wilburton. If you would like a larger section then let us know and we'll see what we can do!
We're working on a calender - and would like to include events in the village - so send us the details of your event via the email link at the bottom.

The evening kicks off at 7:30pm, and a free mini bus service will run from Wilburton (bus stop by St Peter's Hall) to Haddenham from 7:30pm - with Aldreth and outer Haddenham pick up points (bus stops) if required. The mini bus will also do drop offs at the bus stops at the end of the evening.
The casino will include Roulette and Blackjack tables, with a play off for the most won chips at the end of the evening to win some excellent prizes.

Mereham - Again
Before even all the Say No To Mereham signs have been taken down, it's back! Despite it being rejected by the local Parish Councils, District Councils, County Council, the Planning Inspectorate and the Secretary of State, Barton Willmore seem to think it was time to try again and have put it forward to the EERA (against the EERA's own rules) for consideration. It was rejected on so many counts by the Secretary of State it's hard to understand why Barton Willmore would risk their reputation by submitting it again, and so soon.
Let's hope that the EERA follow their own rules and reject it outright at an early stage, so no more of our money is wasted of this pathetic idea. Keep up to date with our Say No To Mereham section.
Wilburton Theatre Group - Christmas Panto
The Christmas Panto this year is Mother Goose - and will be on the 11th, 12th and 13th December. Shows start at 7:30pm, with the Saturday afternoon show at 2:30pm.
Tickets: £6 Adults, £4 Concessions, £7 on the door.
Wilburton Albion appoint new manager
After yet another successful season which saw Wilburton Albion promoted
to Division 2A, the current manager and club have mutually decided they
will not continue for the forthcoming season.
A local man, Richard Smith, will take up the post this year with the
full backing of the senior management team. Richard was previously
manager at Girton United where in his first 2 seasons he saw his team
climb two divisions to 1A in the Saturday leagues.
Richard has some work to do before the season starts and is currently on
the lookout for new players to strengthen his squad. A signing on day
has been organised at the local sociable club between the hours of
12.00pm and 16.30pm on June 29th 2008.

This Website
During the Christmas period, the hosting company for this website "disappeared" - and so did this site! We've now moved to a new hosting company, and hopefully everything is up and running properly. Hopefully this year we'll have time to sort this site out properly, to include much more information about the groups and events within the village. Have a great 2008!
Village Events
- I have finally got round to starting to add new sections to this website (Mereham has taken up a lot of time). The first is Village Events - click on the entry in the menu to see more details. If you are holding an event in the village, be it regular or a one off, let me know and I'll include it.
Say No To Mereham - The Inquiry has started:
The public inquiry has started, and members of the public were able to start voicing there objections on Wednesday 17th. Some very good points were raised - and people have obviously spent a lot of their own time going though the documents, and were able to highlight incorrect and inconsistent information thoughout. Personal views, and in one case the actual danger to life due to the amount of congestion on the A10 when trying to get to hospital, were highlighted. Local knowledge stood out above the writings of the developers and their team, including figures on rainfall and storage requirements which showed that real experience over many years is better than sitting behind a desk! And just how far is it to the Haddenham pumping station? The developers didn't seem to sure...
Say No To Mereham - Public Meeting 28th Sep 2007:
There will be a public meeting to discuss the Mereham proposals on Friday 28th September in St. Peter's Church Hall, Wilburton at 7:30pm.
04 Sep 2007
A petition has been set up on the Downing Street Petition website - go to http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/SAYNO2MEREHAM/ and sign it if you want to Say No To Mereham! Thanks to those at Haddenham who set this up.
02 Aug 2007:
If you wish to speak at the inquiry at the Arkenstall Centre in Haddenham then you need to attend on the first day - 9th October 2007 - and inform the Planning Inspector and you will be giving a slot of time during the inquiry. We want to get as many people as possible to turn up and register - to help show the total lack of support for this plan locally, and also to help highlight the many failings of these proposals.
We have been informed that you have a better chance of speaking if you register before the inquiry - see the Mereham Petition/Inquiry section for more details
Do you live in a prominent location in one of the villages that will be affected by this proposal? If so, would you like a "Say No to Mereham" poster? Yes - great - contact us and we'll try to sort one out for you! The posters do cost money, they are available at £5.00 each - but if you would like a poster but can't afford one, let us know and we'll see what we can arrange.
Who will be affected by Mereham if it goes ahead? Easy - anyone who uses the A10 and B1049 North of Cambridge - which includes Milton, Histon, Cottenham, Waterbeach, Landbeach, Stretham, Wilburton, Haddenham, Little Thetford, Ely, Sutton...and beyond. This proposal is likely to bring chaos to the A10, A1123 and B1049 (Twenty Pence Road) - roads which are already incredibly busy. A few buses each hour is not going to solve the problem this will create - nor are the proposals for widening the A10 (just a little bit). Don't just sit back and do nothing, get involved - this is your future the developers are going to profit from!
And if you're not too concerned about the traffic chaos - think about schools, doctors, places to park in Ely - all these will be over subscribed during the development of Mereham - the proposal may include 3 schools, but they don't start building until years into the development. There is no provision for further education (college) either, so if your child is going to be trying to get a college place in 5-10 years, where is he or she going to go? Witchford certainly won't be able to accomodate the extra numbers.
If you want your event, group or organisation in Wilburton advertised here then contact us - we can easily add posters to the site if you can send us electronic versions (Word document, PDF, etc.). It's free for anything in Wilburton!
