Responses to the Public Consultation Survey
The following responses have been received from the online Mereham Public Consultation survey. We only show surveys after we have reviewed them, to prevent inappropriate comments being shown.

Q1: What are your general impressions of the illustrative layout for the development?
Not very clear. Pretty colours no substance.
Q2: What do you think about the proposed improvements to the A10?
The improvements are not good enough.
They say they will not have an entrance onto Twentypence Road, so why when looking at the plan have they included the bridleway or roadway in their plans.
Q3: What particular facilities would you like to see in the proposed new community?
None, as I do not want the developement at all. the area just cannot cope with that number of people or cars. Public transport is no good so most families will have at least two cars if not three if children still live at home.
Q4: What do you think about the proposed public open space provision and wetlands reserver? Is there anything you would like to see provided there?
I really do not beleive that they will even build them, I believe Cambourne is still waiting for some of their open spaces. On the plans I saw some open spaces that can so easily be filled in with houses later when the dust has settled. We will have wetlands anyway as their is no were for the water to go and what many people forget is the natural springs in that area.
Q5: Do you have any other comments?
I have but I think they would be unprintable.

Q1: What are your general impressions of the illustrative layout for the development?
Too dense. Too much concrete in one place will lead to flooding as the proposed site has been set aside as a flood plain. In places where we can see along the A10 there has already been standing water for months and there is probably more away from the road. If the agricultural land that normally soaks up most of the rainfall is concreted over, there will be flooding in other areas. Who will pay for this once the developers have moved on? Have we learnt nothing from the recent flooding in Yorkshire?
Q2: What do you think about the proposed improvements to the A10?
Not good enough. Ely has had massive housing estates built over the last 5 years and most of these people work in Cambridge. Ely and the surrounding villages are the commuter belt for Cambridge as houses become more expensive the closer to the city you go. Public transport is non-existent at rush hours in and out of Cambridge as the buses are diverted to carry schoolchildren. There is already huge pressure on the two existing roads, the A10 and Twentypence Road, which itself goes through Cottenham and Histon, which both have schools and children on bikes at these times. When the A14 is closed due to accidents (every time it rains) traffic is diverted along these two roads as well, making them almost gridlocked. This regular disruption already affects the economic wellbeing of the city, not to mention the pollution aspect of sitting in miles of traffic jams.
Q3: What particular facilities would you like to see in the proposed new community?
Nothing is needed in this area. Ely and Cambridge are sufficient.
Q4: What do you think about the proposed public open space provision and wetlands reserver? Is there anything you would like to see provided there?
Not enough. There is already standing water on these fields, how is building over soakaway land going to help?
Q5: Do you have any other comments?
1. Look at Cambourne where badly planned building has caused flooding.
2. Northstowe is already going to be built soon. This will add more traffic to already congested roads. People who can't get in to work along the A14 (and there won't be any improvements there for several years) will use the A1123, A10 and Twentypence Road meaning that even without this proposed new development, traffic will be getting much worse before long.
3. Planning permission has already been granted for the large housing estates in Ely, where at least there is some infrastructure in place to cope with the extra people. There is still unused land around Ely that could take more housing if absolutely necessary.
4. Surely it is better to expand carefully through small developments in existing villages such as Wilburton, Stretham, Haddenham, Oakington, Cottenham, Waterbeach, Landbeach and Horningsea. If this housing is needed in this area, spread it around several existing villages, not in a huge conglomoration which will irreversibly change the ecosystem and make the lives of everyone who already lives in the area more difficult. This would still provide the same amount of new housing but won't impact so severely on the existing infrastructure.
